For his 9th wedding anniversary, hacker “Derk” wanted to make his wife something special and unexpected, as well as sparkly and musical. To accomplish this, he recycled a bundle of fiber optics, gluing them into a homemade boombox in a pattern that spells out “D&J 3–15–08.”

He then lit up each of the letters using Adafruit’s Circuit Playground, which has 10 programmable RGB LEDs along with a microphone that allowed the device to react to the music visually.

Music is piped in via a Bluetooth receiver, and the resulting boombox — which is powered by reclaimed Tesla lithium cells — not only spells out their anniversary date on top in colorful letters, but has a window in the front to show off the fibers themselves.

Though the results are excellent, if you’re going to try something similar yourself, note that Derk did spend three hours drilling 450 holes for the fibers and another nine to twelve hours gluing them in the box. Consider yourself warned!
