Animatronic Sea of Thieves Bounty Skull Serenades Trick-Or-Treaters

There are only three situations when you’re likely to see animatronics: when visiting a Disney theme park, when dining at a Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant, and on Halloween. The first is expensive, and most of us avoid the second at all cost. That leaves Halloween as the perfect time to flex your animatronic-engineering skills. Garrett Williams took that opportunity to build a singing animatronic bounty skull from Sea of Thieves.

Bounty skulls are treasure items that players can collect in the Sea of Thieves video game, and there are a total of six individual types. Williams recently modeled all six in Blender, and 3D printed them as display pieces. For Halloween he has taken one of them, the Foul Bounty Skull, and turned it into an animatronic that can belt out the classics. The first step was to modify his original 3D model to include a jaw bone, since the in-game skulls that he replicated are missing them.

He then used a 3-Axis Skull Kit from Monster Guts, which is a set of hardware intended specifically for animatronic movement. The kit has the hardware necessary to pivot the head left to right, tilt front to back, and to move the jaw. That was paired with a Fright Props PicoTalk Servo controller, which operates the servos in sync with music. Once assembled, the two kits worked nicely together to bring the skull to life. With a bit of spooky lighting, it’s now ready to serenade trick-or-treaters all evening long.
