We just received word that Arduino is launching a new iteration of the Yùn…

Announced back in 2013 at Maker Faire Bay Area, the Yùn was Arduino’s first piece of Linux-enabled hardware. The board, which had taken the form of a classic Leonardo with the ATmega32U4 MCU, was equipped with an Atheros processor running Linino (a MIPS GNU/Linux based on OpenWRT).

The Yùn rose in popularity amongst the maker community, but succumbed to the internal issues that plagued the company over the last couple of years. Not to mention, the Arduino was admittedly never a true open source product and the software experienced a plethora of challenges that needed to be fixed.

Fast forward to now, and the Arduino team has decided to breathe new life into the Linux line. According to their post, the new board is expected to become available in late April and will feature a number of improvements:

Hardware:

  • Much better, more robust power supply
  • New Ethernet connector with a clever mounting solution that enables the use of all possible shields with no risk for accidental short circuits
  • Horizontal USB connector to save vertical space
  • Improved USB hub

Software:

  • Software stack updated to OpenWRT latest version, including all patches
  • SSL support on the bridge Arduino / Linux bridge

We’ll be bringing you an in-depth article shortly! Until then, can find more details on the Arduino blog.
