Over the summer, Hackster and Samsung IoT called upon the ARTIK community to build new applications highlighting IoT interoperability. To no surprise, more than 1,400 developers from around the world responded to the Ultimate IoT Challenge Using ARTIK Cloud for a shot at one of five awesome grand prizes.

Participants were encouraged to submit projects using ARTIK Cloud APIs and SDKs to connect two or more devices and/or cloud services, as well as employ the Samsung ARTIK Smart IoT platform rules engine to set up at least one interaction between the devices and/or services.

After some review, we’ve selected our winners. Congrats to everyone involved, espeically those listed below!

Best Arduino & ARTIK Cloud Mashup:Nerf-Connected Target on Steroids
Connected target using Sigfox network, ARTIK Cloud and Slack. Ready to shoot?
Best Smart Home Application: Face Lock Deadbolts
Using 3D RealSense facial recognition to unlock deadbolt doors through ARTIK Cloud.
Best Transportation Application: Generating GPS Traces for Upload in OpenStreetMap
Generate detailed GPS traces on your phone, upload them in real-time, and visualize them directly on OpenStreetMap.
Best Personal Tracking/Wearables Application: Controlling a Patient’s Fever With ARTIK & Arduino
This project consists of two parts. A wearable MKR1000 device that can monitor a patient’s fever, and send information to a doctor via ARTIK Cloud. The doctor can then send instructions back to a second device to activate a cooling mechanism.
Best Community/Smart City Application: Eco — A Smart Garbage Container
The Smart Garbage Container aims to optimize waste collection and ultimately reduce fuel consumption. This project can transmit messages to the waste management company indicating the container’s internal temperature, or when the trash needs to be emptied.

Not only did this Challenge demonstrate the ingenuity of the IoT developer community, but showed how quickly devices can be connected to the ARTIK Cloud and made to work together. Be sure to check out all of the winners and submitted entries here!
