Billy Asks, “Wanna Play a Game?”

If you viewed the original Saw in 2004, you might not have expected that there would be seven sequels. On the other hans Billy, a tricycle-riding puppet the size of a small child is tough to forget. With a kid on the way, hacker “david0429” decided that there would be no better time to build his own Billy model.

The resulting build consists of a modified tricycle with a Billy model on top made out of a wooden frame. Forward power is provided by a gearmotor that drives the front wheel, while a servo is mounted inside the bottom of the trike’s horizontal tube in order to control direction via 3D-printed gears. Finally, another servo controls the doll’s mouth, while a portable speaker mounted inside of its pants provides a terrifying laugh and asks the question of, “Wanna play a game?”

Control for the device is accomplished via a Raspberry Pi, which acts as a web server, presenting your smart device with a browser-based interface. This eliminates the need for an extra controller, as a smartphone or tablet can accomplish this task quite nicely. An Adafruit DC and stepper motor hat is used to control the motors directly.

Be sure to check it out in action in the video below. I’ll assume that this will be closet-ware for quite some time until “David Jr.” is old enough to see the movies!
