Broken Portable Casio TV-400 Retrofitted with Raspberry Pi Internals

Sometimes you buy parts for a project, and other times, the parts that you have inspire a certain build. Such was the case for hacker “JaguarWong,” who obtained a broken Casio TV-400 for free. Such cool retro hardware opens up a wide range of possibilities, and JW had both a full-sized Raspberry Pi that was obtained as a Christmas give a few years ago, along with a little screen from eBay that was acquired with the intention of using with the Pi.

While these components had been dormant for some time, with the pocket TV in-hand, “everything fell into place.” As the unit was broken anyway, internals were stripped from the mini TV, and accommodations were made for the Pi’s USB and Ethernet ports on the bottom. HDMI and power connections emanate from the side of the former TV, creating a convenient shell for the Pi and screen.

These new pieces barely fit into the TV-400, with gaffer tape helping to hold the parts in place and presumably help insulate connections from shorts. For power, the device appears to need to be plugged into the wall to operate, but with an exposed HDMI port and an IR sensor that came with the screen, it could make for a nice compact media center to feed a larger screen.
