Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices can be quite useful for storing data outside of your actual computer, but generally range in price from a little over $100 to much, much more depending on their capabilities.
The good news is that you can now build your own using an $8 NanoPi Neo and this NAS Kit from Friendly Elec. The aluminum enclosure, which measures 6″ x 3.9″ x 1.9″, has space for the tiny board as well as a 2.5” hard drive, giving you a 1-bay storage solution for a cost just north of $30.
On the other hand, you’ll need to provide your own hard drive, but perhaps you have an old notebook that would make a suitable donor. For that matter, this type of NAS setup is an interesting concept that could inspire similar DIY solutions.
