C.H.I.P. Pro Clones Now on Amazon

The demise of Next Thing Co. has left a number of C.H.I.P. owners annoyed, but there’s now some interesting news for those of you that are missing the C.H.I.P. Pro. A company called Source Parts is now “…actively producing CHIP Pro derivatives and has made them available on Amazon.”

The C.H.I.P. Pro wasn’t exactly the same as the original C.H.I.P. board, so if you’re looking some something to keep your PocketC.H.I.P working you might want to take a look at Christopher Alessandro’s Beagle-ish reinvention of the board instead.

The C.H.I.P. Pro was based on the GR8, where Allwinner R8 and 256Mb RAM is built in a single package, without external high-speed RAM, and the castellated headers are a heavy hint that it was meant to be soldered directly to another circuit board. It was intended as a development board for the GR8, not necessarily a board for makers.

The ‘new’ derivative boards cost $39, plus shipping, and they’re being fulfilled by Amazon. So if you’re worried that you’ll never get the hardware, you can at least be reassured that Amazon has something sitting in their warehouse. But if you’re interested in picking one up, you might need to hurry. Because, at least right now, there are only three left in stock.

A note to the wise however, the pictures on the Amazon page for the board are images of the original C.H.I.P. Pro board, right down to the original FCC ID and branding on the GR8 processor. What you’re actually going to receive for your money is therefore somewhat open to question?
