Whether in the form of auto-tuned music, or perhaps even Alvin and the Chipmunks’ songs of many years ago, altering one’s voice isn’t a new concept. Most of the time when you hear an altered voice, it’s recorded; however, Cornell students Sean Carroll, Gulnar Miza, and James Talmage made a system that uses a DE1-SoC FPGA to change their voices in real-time.

As seen in the video below, the results are hilarious — especially when Talmage’s voice is shifted up at 4:15, causing him to sound like a “cartoon bee.” The final product is able to produce many different effects, all while being controlled from a simple GUI displayed on a VGA monitor.

For more details of this build, check out their project write-up here and on GitHub.
