In the world of smart wearables, it’s hard to find a better place to start than with NFC. Near-field communication chips are small, inexpensive, and don’t require any onboard power source. You can integrate them into just about anything and have a way to control your smartphone in neat ways. NFC rings are a really popular type option, and this forged carbon fiber ring from Patrick Adair is the most beautiful one we’ve seen.

Adair builds astonishingly gorgeous custom rings, and often documents the process on his YouTube channel Patrick Adair Designs. His rings are usually made from rare and unusual materials, like meteorites or superconductors, and often pack some extra functionality. This ring is no different, and integrates a small NFC chip that can be used to unlock a smartphone. But, NFC rings are a dime a dozen, and it’s the fantastic design and novel materials that make this one stand out.

Adair started by turning a special forged carbon fiber composite on a lathe to create the basic form of the ring. He then cut a groove in the center for the NFC chip to fit into. Next, he put in a handful of discrete components that were included purely for their aesthetics. After that came some glow powder, which glows after being exposed to UV light. Finally, he added tritium vials, which are often used in firearm night sights because they emit light radioactively without a power source. With some resin and polishing, the ring was finished and looks amazing.
