Don’t you just hate those “ran out of it” moments? So do we, which is why we were so excited to launch the Amazon Dash Replenishment Service Developer Challenge back in October.

Amazon DRS enables connected devices to order physical goods whenever supplies are running low. It also allows developers to build automatic or low-friction replenishment experiences of their own, leveraging the company’s retail platform.

With hopes of advancing their DRS vision, Amazon called upon the Hackster community to create next-generation consumable reordering solutions. Fast forward several months and 370 participants later, we have finally selected the top three projects. These winners will be taking home a 27" iMac, some cash, and a personalized trophy. (Trust us, the hardware is pretty awesome!)

Thank you to all who entered their ideas. Although the high quality of submissions made this an extremely difficult decision, it has opened our eyes to the endless possibilities of what Amazon DRS has to offer. Projects were scored based on a number of factors, including relevance, creativity, documentation, and storytelling, with bonus points given out for use of APIs, videos, and DRS certification.

So without further do, here are your winners!

🏆1st Place: FilamentBot Smart 3D Printer Filament Counter

The FilamentBot by Bin Sun is an Arduino MKR1000-controlled Amazon DRS smart counter that will continuously track your 3D printer’s filament usage, and place a new order when your spool is running low.

🏆2nd Place: JavaWatch, Your Coffee Bean Guardian

Finding out there’s no coffee left is not a good way to start your day. To prevent this from ever happening, Terren Peterson devised a low-friction experience for his kitchen using the power of a Raspberry Pi Zero, image recognition AI, and Amazon DRS.

🏆3rd Place: Self-Replenishing Smart Fridge + Amazon DRS PHP API

If it’s up to Andrew T., your next fridge won’t just keep your food cold, it’ll keep track of what’s inside and make sure that it’s always full with help from a Raspberry Pi and Pi Camera Module. To accomplish this, the smart appliance can record products and send messages to either a website or Android app via Amazon EC2.

Don’t forget to check out all the other entries as well, which range from 3D printer tools, to smart desks, to automated pet feeders.
