DACBerry ONE+ Brings High-Quality Audio to Your Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi line of single-board computers are extremely capable, especially considering how affordable they are. That’s why we see them being used in so many different projects that we feature here on the Hackster.io blog. But that affordability does come with some sacrifices, and one of the most notable is its low-quality audio output. A separate DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) is the best way to improve that, and the DACBerry ONE+ is the newest option.

The OSA Electronics DACBerry ONE+ just launched on Kickstarter, and it is already getting close to reaching its funding goal. But this is hardly OSA Electronics’ first foray into the Raspberry Pi DAC market. They’re already well known for their high-quality DACs, including the DACBerry ONE, DACBerry RDY, and the DACBerry PRO. The DACBerry ONE+ is simply the newest model, and improves upon the classic DACBerry ONE. Like it’s predecessors, it is designed to work with a Raspberry Pi, but can also be used with other single-board computers like Odroid, Banana Pi, and Asus Tinker Board.

The DACBerry ONE+ has an audio resolution of 384kHz / 32 bits, and the DAC chip receives data from the Raspberry Pi over I2S, which is more desirable than cheap USB sound cards. It has hardware volume mixing, and audio is output through RCA connectors, a 3.5mm headphone jack, or S/PDIF TOSLINK optical. When used with a Raspberry Pi, the DACBerry ONE+ gets power directly from the GPIO pins, so you don’t need a separate power supply to use it.

If you want a DACBerry ONE+, the Kickstarter campaign will be running until April 25th. Backers can get a single unit for €69 (about $78 USD). Rewards are expected to be delivered in April.
