Distracted driving consistently ranks one of top traffic safety issues at forefront of many drivers’ minds. And rightfully so, as studies suggest that distractions contribute to 16% of all fatal crashes, leading to around 5,000 deaths every year.

With hopes of improving safety and convenience behind the wheel, one Bay Area startup has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new Raspberry Pi-based, Alexa-powered dashcam: Dride.

Discretely installed behind your front mirror, Dride features a real-time alert system, navigation, and voice-to-text capabilities. With its open source software, you can even build your own in-car apps and personalize your experience to suit your needs.

Dride allows you to create an infinite amount of apps for anything you can think of. Want to make an app to report parents that forget their children in their car, put an end to reckless drivers on the road or alert yourself when you are passing your favorite coffee house, have Dride record your to-do list while driving or set-up reminders? Do it!

Dride not only records DVR video, like any ordinary dashcam, but saves the footage, shares it with the startup’s worldwide community, and stores both GPS locations and license plate numbers. With the use of Dride Cloud, reckless drivers will now be encouraged to drive more responsibly, since they know that their dangerous speeds or careless actions will be documented and reported. Plus, this sort of information can be quite valuable if you’re ever involved in an accident.

What’s more, this hands-free driving device was designed to provide natural and intuitive voice controls, while alerting you if you’re not paying attention. It also comes equipped with Alexa, enabling you to interact with Amazon’s assistant on the road.

Dride has custom-designed features that will allow you to interact with your phone. You can have Dride read and write your text messages and navigate you to your destination so that you can keep your eyes off your phone and on the road!

Dride is equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. You can use the connected gadget together your smartphone or with a compatible cellular dongle. Following its crowdfunding campaign, the sleek unit will be available in a variety of colors.
