Poi is a style of performance art that originated with the Māori people of New Zealand, which is characterized by the performers swinging and twirling tethered weights — also called poi. You may have seen a popular fire poi performance, which are very eye-catching. But many poi performers now like to use electrically-lit poi, and these new Smartsticks are top of the line.

The Smartsticks were designed by Jeff and Kevin of Lightsale, who are poi performers themselves. They created these smart LED poi to fit their own needs, and have now launched a Kickstarter campaign so you can get your own set. These aren’t the first smart LED poi to hit the market, but they are likely the best value considering the features they have incorporated.

Each Smartstick measures 6.7" long with a 1" diameter, has 24 RGB LEDs per side, a 2500 mAh lithium-ion battery, and comes in a crack-proof transparent polycarbonate shell. Most importantly, however, they’re completely programmable. That means you can create your own animated patterns and develop your own mesmerizing performances.

The Smartsticks Kickstarter campaign is running until February 3rd, and you can grab a DIY pair kit for $150. Rewards should ship in May.
