Grassffiti Turns Your Lawn Into Canvas

Inspired by how easy it is to make patterns on carpet or grass using your hand (probably like you did as a kid), Yuta Sugiura recently built a machine capable of producing large-scale images on lawns.

A user draws what they want replicated with a custom app, then guides the aptly named Grassffiti across the desired area. The device consists of a roller with a rotary encoder and 16 servo motors fixed with rods. The servos and rods raise the grass surface and brush the blades in different directions to create the design, while the encoder keeps track of horizontal movement.

Grassffiti may not generate the highest-res pictures, but it’s pretty darn awesome nevertheless. Not to mention, it’s perfect for etching logos in the outfield of baseball stadiums baseball or even welcome messages on your front lawn!
