The Internet of Things (IoT), and home automation in general, is intended to make your life as easy as possible by adding convenience. They do that by, for instance, allowing you to turn a light on or off remotely. That’s simple enough to set up if you’re using only commercial devices. But, if you want something more custom, you might want to follow Brian Lough’s YouTube video to configure your home automation through the Telegram messenger.

Telegram is a messaging app and service, but isn’t a dedicated IoT framework. It does, however, have lots of advanced features integrated right into the service. One of those is a bot that’s accessible through the messaging app, which is what this home automation system relies on. That offers a couple of advantages over traditional IoT frameworks, most notably that its flexible in how your network is arranged. Both the control device and the IoT device can be located anywhere, so long as internet service is available.

To use Telegram to control your devices at home, you’re going to need an ESP8266 development. That’s an Arduino-compatible device that you can use to interact with whatever you want to automate — either directly, or through a relay. Lough will walk you through how to create your Telegram account, the bot that runs on it, and configuring your ESP8266 to work with it. After everything is setup, you’ll be able to control your DIY IoT device through simple commands in the Telegram app.
