Lamps normally perform one function: lighting up a room. This amazing lamp from Gosse Adema, however, not only provides ambient lighting via 288 LEDs inside, but is set up as a cylindrical matrix to display the weather in brilliant colors using data pulled from the Weather Underground website API.

To indicate the temperature, the lamp color gradient varies from red to blue, along with yellow to help the colors stand out. Cleverly, the hot/cold color indications are keyed to the average temperature during a season, keeping things relevant whether you’d expect it to be below freezing or extremely hot outside. Rain can also be displayed as a series of white dots traversing down the cylinder, while snow is indicated by dots traveling horizontally.

The device is controlled with a Raspberry Pi, and the strips are arranged around the inside of the lamp’s shell in a 3D-printed housing. It’s an extremely well thought-out design, with plenty of documentation if you’d like to build your own.

Additionally, since it’s driven by a Raspberry Pi, there’s no reason that the gadget can’t be setup to display other information and patterns, such as social media alerts, an emergency light, or even as a virtual lava lamp!
