Infinitone Is the “Saxophone of the Future”

If you know anything about music, you know that on most instruments you’re somewhat limited to the pitches you can produce via frets, holes, or valves. However, if you attempt to sing or play instruments like a trombone, fretless guitar, or Theremin, the pitch can be varied infinitely. Though this gives you the power to play many more “notes,” this also means that playing a correct pitch can be very difficult.

To this end, Subhraag Singh has created an instrument whose concept “will ignite an explosion of musical creativity unlike anything ever before witnessed in history.” This potentially revolutionary device, dubbed “the Infinitone,” takes the form of a pyramidal woodwind controlled by five independent slides, along with a mouthpeice similar to that of a saxophone.

These slides are connected to Arduino-driven motors and operated by a custom iPad interface, which allows Singh to play an entirely new scale at 5:43 in the video seen below. Be sure to check out around 6:25 as well for another entertaining demonstration.
