Since you’re reading our blog, you likely know that older game “ROMs” can be loaded onto a modern computer, or even a Raspberry Pi, to be played without an actual console. Then again, running games saved on a portable memory device on the native system itself is not nearly as common, though has been around for years.*

Hacker “Phanick” shows us his approach to creating an FPGA-based emulator with several iterations of an SD card-loading gadget, as well as its capabilities in the video below.

Though the final product is a Famicom-like cartridge with an SD card slot, the cyberpunk prototype, seen around 0:45 and pictured in his write-up (translated), is quite a glorious display of bare computing power. Also of note is that the prototype cartridge is sticking out of a “,” an unauthorized Polish version of Nintendo’s Famicom.

*As pointed out by some of our Facebook fans, this style of ROM-loading is reminiscentofthe EverDrive N8.
