Magnetic Projectile Launcher Built for Precision Over Speed

There are many ways to fire a projectile, but Imgurian “Appleguy1982” decided to make a two-coil electromagnetic launcher to accomplish this task.

The device charges a bank of capacitors up to a certain voltage, then pulses them in sequence to accelerate the projectile. The process uses around 50 amps of current at up to 100 volts, which can be set via a dial to vary the output speed.

Output speed is measured with four IR sensors, which can also be used to calculate acceleration. While it maxes out at only 50 feet per second, this is perfect for its intended educational application. It’s a neat build from a technical standpoint, and the laser-cut cut wood gives it an extremely polished appearance that should fit in nicely with any classroom!
