If you grew up in the 1980s, you remember playing cassettes in your portable stereo or car, and perhaps producing mix tapes of your favorite songs from the radio. You also have likely noticed that auto manufacturers chose to keep tape decks over the simple line-in jack well into the 2000s, meaning this format isn’t quite dead, if only as a connection method for more modern equipment.

On the other hand, what if the “adapter” was the music player itself? In a strange technological twist, the MIXXTAPE — now on Kickstarter — is designed to act as a fully functional digital audio player with a headphone jack, an LCD display, touch controls, and Bluetooth capabilities in the size and shape of a cassette.

MIXXTAPE even packs a micro SD slot for 64GB of memory and a 330mAh rechargeable battery that provides 12 hours of playback. Importantly though, not only does it look like a reto tape, it can actually be inserted into and played in an actual deck!

For a growing number of fans, labels, and musicians there seems to be a yearning for music that offers a much fuller and more tactile experience, something that goes beyond the digital bits that feed nonstop streams from services such as Spotify and Apple Music… In addition, streaming services often have annoying ads, can be interrupted by calls and texts, and drains your phone battery. With MIXXTAPE you can listen to up to 12 hours of uninterrupted music and it can be fully charged in less than an hour.
