Octavo Systems has introduced the company’s first OSD32MP15x system in package (SiP) based on STMicroelectronics’ STM32MP1, which retains the latter’s 18mm x 18mm footprint while packing up to 1Gb of DDR3, EEPROM, and more. According to the press release, “Octavo has leveraged their years of experience creating tightly integrated system building blocks to develop a device that is up to 64% smaller than an equivalent system made from discrete components.”

On the hardware side, the OSD32MP15x SiP (AKA 302-Ball BGA SiP) is equipped with a dual-core Arm Cortex-A7 (@ 650MHz), a Cortex-M4 (@ 209MHz), STPMIC1 PMIC (5.2V Boost, Buck, 4x LDOs, 2x power switches), and up to 1Gb of DDR3 RAM. It also features 4K of non-volatile EEPROM, 2X MEMs oscillators (main, RTC), and over 100 passive components, along with peripherals encompassing 2 x 22 channels of 16bit ADC, camera interfaces, Ethernet, and HMI displays.

Considering the SiP is outfitted with an STM31MP1 SoC, the platform can take advantage of STMicroelectronics’ STM32Cube development platform, which includes a toolset and embedded software bricks that make it easy to migrate MCU designs to a Linux-based processor. The Cortex-M4 allows developers to reuse STM32 MCU Cube Firmware as well, further speeding up the design process.

“The continued push of IoT and the demand for more data has required many applications to migrate from an existing microcontroller design to one based on a microprocessor running Linux. There are usually two major hurdles that prevent this from being an easy transition; porting their application, and complicated hardware designs. Integrating the new STM32MP1 into the OSD32MP1 removes these roadblocks, greatly reducing the effort required to migrate from a microcontroller to a microprocessor running Linux.” — Greg Sheridan, Octavo Marketing Manager

Design resources for the OSD32MP1 can already be found on the company’s website. Samples of the SiP will become available in Q3 of this year, while full production begins in Q4. There’s no word yet on pricing.
