If you’re just getting started with Arduino, the Uno is a great choice, but it can be relatively large for some projects at roughly 68 x 53mm. Tinier and/or more powerful boards are available such as the Arm-based MKR family, but you’ll most likely need to add other components to come up with a truly interesting project. For an even smaller option that includes the same SAM D21 processor as well as an array of accessories built-in, look no further than the PocketScreen — now funding on Kickstarter.

As its name implies, the device features a tiny color OLED display, along with a microSD card reader, three user buttons, and a micro USB connector with a LiPo charging circuit. This screen/processor combo impressively allows it to show color 3D graphics at over 30fps as seen on its Kickstarter video just after the 0:45 mark. If you’re thinking that this would make a perfect platform for a mini gaming console, you’re not far off. It also sports the same hardware as the PocketStar keychain gaming system, but in a package less than ½ the size — 25 x 22mm and 5mm thick.

Single units are available on Kickstarter for about $33 USD, or you can get 10 for $258. Funding ends in a little over a month with delivery slated for August, so you won’t have to wait long. Moreover, if it reaches the €20,000 ($22,370 USD) stretch goal, a wireless ESP8266EX WiFi chip will be added, opening up possibilities for the PocketScreen further!
