Getting kids interested in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) is tricky, but important nonetheless. Our future depends on children eventually working in these fields, and we need to get them involved early if we want them to develop a passion for it. micro:bit is a small, inexpensive development board that was created specifically to be easy for kids to use in order to accomplish that goal. The new Qdee Robot Kit expands that so that children can build their own robots with the micro:bit.

The Qdee Robot Kit, now on Kickstarter, was designed from the ground-up to be built by kids as young as 8 years-old. By following the detailed build tutorial, they can assemble the Starter Kit in just an hour or two. That has all of the sensors and motors necessary for a variety of fun, interactive robot adventures. Once they’ve built their robot, kids can control it using mobile apps, desktop programs, or a Bluetooth controller.

Qdee is also expandable with simple servos upgrades and attachments. Those can be added easily to create custom robots so children can express themselves. The robots can be programmed with the Microsoft MakeCode visual code block editor, so kids will even get a chance to learn programming while they play.

The Qdee Kickstarter campaign is running until December 17th, and early birds can get the Starter Kit with an included micro:bit for $48. The Standard Kit that includes additional frame pieces is $98 for early birds, with the micro:bit included. Rewards are expected to ship in December.
