RAK Wireless released their RAK811 LoRa Tracker earlier this year and is a favorite board among makers who rely on the LoRa protocol for long-range communications. The RAK811 hosts an STM32L151 chipset with an Arm Cortex-M3 CPU, a Semtech SX1276 LoRa chip and uses the LoRaWAN 1.0.2 protocol. It’s a great little board, however RAK Wireless released a more powerful LoRa tracker that sports a 96Boards IoT Edition footprint with the WisTrio LORA Tracker based on the RK5205 chipset.

The board features a RAK5205 module with SX1276 LoRa chipset, STM32L1 Arm Cortex-M3 microcontroller, as well as a Quqectel L76-L GNNS chip that supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS. The WisTrio board also packs a LIS3DH 3-axis accelerometer, along with a BME680 environmental sensor for detecting gas, humidity, pressure, and temperature.

As far as I/O is concerned, the board is outfitted with a 96Boards 30-pin header (UART, I2C, ADC, RESET, GPIOS), micro USB, 2-pin USB Boot jumper, 2-pin battery female interface, and 2-pin solar panel female jumper. In terms of LoRa connectivity, it uses the LoRaWAN 1.0.2 protocol, ABP/OTAA activation, has a programmable bitrate up to 300Kbps, SMA/iPEX antenna options, and has support for EU433, CN470, EU868, US915, AS923, AU915, KR920, and IN865 global bands.

The WisTrio includes a rechargeable battery (charged via USB port), as well as a 5V solar charging port, and offers low-power consumption at just 14.5uA (sleep mode), and 174mA in normal mode. The board supports open source code, enhanced AT commands, and is programmed using the CooCox IDE or Keil. The WisTria LORA Tracker (96Boards IoT Edition) is now available at $49.50, and ships with GPS and LoRa antennas, and a micro USB cable.
