Maker David Levin and his wife have been busy traveling the world for the last few years, obtaining photographs, souvenirs, and, interestingly, recorded audio of the environment. While physical items and printed photos are easy enough to put on display, there’s not a good option for audio memories.

At least there wasn’t, as Levin decided to make his own display chest out of an old card catalog, that when opened plays a random sound from that region.

The device uses an array of Hall effect sensors to detect whether a rare earth magnet attached to each drawer is pulled out. When this happens, an Arduino Pro Mini signals a serial MP3 player to play a corresponding sound from the visisted location via speakers embedded in the chest.
