In today’s hurried world, who really has time to pour their own beer? Sure, it may not be as high on your list of priorities as preparing food or keeping your house clean, but at least two groups of engineering students have been working on this problem.

The first comes to us from the team of Alejandro Tardio Palacios, Astrid Tepie Zepe, Anthony Vande Eede, and Elistin Yongmene Foue, which uses a laser-cut acrylic frame to fixture a Duvel beer bottle (and only a Duvel beer bottle), lifting and tilting it with a servomotor into a pour position. In turn, a glass is held underneath in a similar manner, which is lifted with its own servo to meet the beer for a perfect — or hopefully at least passing-grade — pour.

The second beer-bot is showcased by “AnandJ22.” It uses a similar setup, however instead of holding the beer in laser-cut acrylic, it employs a 3D-printed holder, allowing for both Duvel and Jupiler beers to be poured into a glass via DC motors. This robot also features a load cell to determine which beer and glass combinations are used, and an LCD display for user interface. Even with this extra sensor, fresh beer pours are “slightly” frothy, though it does quite well with a seemingly flat bottle as seen below!

Each setup uses an Arduino Uno board for control, so in theory, these robots can be improved in the future. Perhaps someday, we’ll be able to avoid the arduous task of pouring beer, freeing us to pursue more lofty goals!
