Long before the days of Spotify radio, MP3s or even CDs, primitive people would put together “mix tapes” consisting of audio copied from other tapes or the radio. This allowed them to play several different musical artists and songs in sequence without the hassle of changing cassettes.

Many of these tapes still exist in one form or another, which the 8bit Mix Tape project takes advantage of to house a novel, Arduino-compatible sound gadget, complete with control knobs sticking out of the two winding holes.

You can see the evolution of this ATtiny84 and 85-powered project on its wiki page, from its humble beginnings as a 0.1 version, with a circuit board attached on the outside of a tape dummy, all the way to the beautiful 0.9 or “Next Level Edition.” They also produced a “Pro Advanced 2000” model out of an NES cartridge, with several more knobs and an LCD display.
