The Adafruit MONSTER M4SK Is Like Two HalloWings Stuck Together

Adafruit is one of the few companies in the world designing, making, and selling interesting products for makers. Some of those are utilitarian, such as breakout boards for your favorite microcontrollers. Others are more fun, and the HalloWing is a great example of that. It is a wearable microcontroller development board with a built-in full-color TFT display and addition goodies like sensors. But soon they’ll be launching something even better: the Adafruit MONSTER M4SK, which is like two HalloWings stuck together.

Like the HalloWing, the MONSTER M4SK has a powerful Microchip ATSAMD51G19 120MHz ARM Cortex-M4 processor. Each of the two screens is a 240x240 pixel IPS TFT display. Those are mounted on the PCB at a human-scale distance apart, but the PCB is also designed to be snapped apart so you can mount them in other ways if you like. Those can be used to display text, still images, or even animated GIFs that are perfect for achieving some cool — or creepy — effects. If you want sound too, you can connect a small 8 ohm speaker directly to the class D audio amp, or use the stereo headphone jack to connect to a more powerful amplifier.

The MONSTER M4SK also has a number of sensors and inputs built into the PCB, including a light sensor, capacitive touch pad, and three tactile buttons. Like most other Adafruit boards, this one is designed with portability in mind. That’s why there is an onboard LiPo charging circuit and voltage regulator. Of course, you also have access to the various IO pins of the microcontroller, so you can expand the functionality however you like. With Halloween just a couple of months away, the MONSTER M4SK is perfect for building an interactive element into your costume.
