The market for mini pocket PCs completely collapsed after smartphones and tablets gained popularity. For the vast majority of users, there wasn’t any need for an ultra-portable PC when their iPhone could do most of the same tasks while being even more portable. But, for a small subset of power users, a tiny PC that runs a full desktop OS is very desirable, and the new GPD MicroPC caters to that.

The GDP MicroPC is a tiny $299 clamshell-style pocket PC (if you have big pockets) that just launched on Indiegogo, and has already reached almost double its $100,000 funding goal. It’s essentially a complete laptop, just in a much more compact 6"x4.5"x1" package. The 1280x720 6" LCD is very small, but that’s the price you’re paying for this kind of portability. On the hardware front, it has an Intel Celeron N4100 processor, integrated Intel UHD 600 Graphics, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and a 128GB M.2 SSD.

Those specs are hardly groundbreaking, but they’re more than enough to run Windows 10 Pro or Ubuntu MATE 18.10 — and likely most other Linux distros. Combine that with the built-in RJ45 and RS-232 ports, and the GDP MicroPC is perfect for network admins or hackers on the go. The battery life is claimed to be between 6 and 8 hours, which is respectable, but not particularly impressive. Most importantly, it has a full QWERTY keyboard — though it’s obviously too small to make typing enjoyable.

If you want a GDP MicroPC, the Indiegogo campaign is running until April 15th. Backers can get one MicroPC for $299 — $100 less than the retail price. Rewards have an estimated delivery in August.
