If you’d like your project to output human-readable information, you normally turn to LEDs or other devices that drain precious current out of your power supply. This is fine in some cases, but if your batteries are quite limited, or need something to be displayed for a long time, this can be rather inefficient. Another alternative is ePaper, or E Ink, but there are some technical hurdles that have to be overcome if you want to use this power-sipping display method.

Paperino — now available on Crowd Supply — aims to simplify this with their new open source ePaper platform, which comes in three different varieties.

First, the Paperino plug-and-play shield makes it easy to start tinkering with the Particle family or Bluz dev kit. A universal breakout board also enables it connect to other Arduino-compatible MCUs with just a little bit of wiring. It fits into breadboards, can stand up vertically, and can even be screwed into your own individual housing. Last but not least, the Paperino small driver module can be hooked up to your own controller or incorporated onto your PCB.

Aside from its glass-free ePaper display, each unit is equipped with temperature sensor and an accelerometer, which allows you to interact with your Paperino in all sorts of ways, including tap sensing.

Given this technology will still display text or images without power, it could work really well for signage, badges, and the like that only needs to be updated intermittently. Back Paperino on Crowd Supply today!
