It seems that solar has been the “future” of powering things for the last 20 years or so, but these devices need one obvious element to function correctly: sunlight. On the other hand, Dutch startup Tryst has come up with an innovative way to harvest energy so that IoT gadgets can run indoors, in some cases on merely the light found under your desk.

This means that instead of needing a battery to operate a device for a while, even a year or more, they can now be deployed and just work — in theory, forever. Tryst’s aptly named “Light Energy” technology employs the combination of an SD card-sized solar panel and a fully-optimized power management system behind it. What’s interesting is that 200 lux of sun or artificial light can charge the module in as little as four hours for a full day of use.

Tryst’s latest products— now available on Kickstarter — can be had in various models, each with different types of integrated sensors: “black” for tracking movement and “white” for monitoring the environment. Perhaps most exciting, though, is the cheaper (about $62) “green” developer-friendly edition, which allows you to add your own sensors into their Arduino IDE and mbed-compatible board, with BLE+NFC or LoRaWAN already built-in.
