This Is the Biggest Delta 3D Printer You’ve Ever Seen, and You Can Build It Yourself

The vast majority of consumer 3D printers have a build volume of 200 x 200 x 200 to 300 x 300 x 300 mm (8 x 8 x 8 to 12 x 12 x 12 inches). There are a few reasons for that, some are technical and some are practical. But the most important reason is that most hobbyists don’t want to print anything bigger than that anyway — the square-cube law means that huge prints would take a very long time to finish. But if you do have a need for truly massive prints, Core3D has a tutorial on how to build the huge C3Dt/bd.

The C3Dt/bd is a completely custom and open-source delta 3D printer design, and is likely the largest delta 3D printer you’ve ever seen. It stands around 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall, and has a build volume of 330mm (13 inches) diameter x 1240mm (48.8 inches) height. Core3D doesn’t specify what the resolution or maximum print speeds are, but those are almost always very good on delta 3D printers. It also has all of the modern technology and convenience features that you’d expect from a high-end 3D printer.

This build definitely isn’t for beginners, and it’s also quite costly at approximately $3,500 for all of the parts. But this design uses all top-quality parts, including a DuetWiFi controller, Panel Due screen, BondTech extruder, E3D hot end, Delta Smart Effector, BuildTak Flex Plate magnetic bed system, and precision linear rails and delta arms. The frame is constructed from heavy-duty aluminum extrusion and 3D-printed mounts. Core3D also came up with a number of unique ideas to keep things tidy, including a slinky-based cable management system. While the C3Dt/bd certainly isn’t for everyone, it’s perfect if you want really tall prints.
