Over the years, we’ve seen some musicians take a hardware approach to releasing their latest albums. Whereas others have turned to the mighty ATtiny85, artist Giorgio Sancristoforo has developed a generative LP using a Raspberry Pi and Sense HAT.

Tableau” is a portable, standalone player, whose sound continues to evolve as it reacts to environmental factors like humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and magnetic fields.

I’ve been dreaming about using portable microcomputers to create a generative music album. Now my dream is finally a reality: this is my first portable generative LP (PGLP).

What’s really neat is that, unlike a CD, a vinyl or an MP3, the LP’s tracks are produced in real-time. This creates an almost endless number of mixes — meaning they never sound the same! (The number of mixes Tableau can produce is 4x12 factorial).

To listen to Tableau, simply plug it into a power source and it automatically begins to generate sound. It works with a 2A 5V battery pack, so it can be taken anywhere.

According to Sancristoforo, future albums will just require a new micro SD card. Updates with new features will be also available, for free. Be sure to check out its website for the release date of the 50 limited edition players.
