Open offices are great for collaboration and culture, but not so much for keeping noise down to a minimum. So what’s an employee to do when he or she needs some serenity? This is where Goldilocks comes in — a Particle-based sensor network from NBBJ’s Digital Practice that helps employees find a “perfect spot.”

The idea began as a NBBJ hackathon project nearly two years ago. A grid of 50-plus sensors were installed in the firm’s New York office — measuring sound, light, movement and temperature, and then relaying that data back to employees through a smartphone app. In so doing, Goldilocks provides workers with the information needed to choose environments that best fit their needs — bright, quiet, warm, cold, etc.

Buildings have been the last black boxes of the information era for too long. Today, Goldilocks is in the hands of users and we are beginning to accumulate and synthesize the data, bringing new insight into what it means to occupy space in the digital age.
