We’ve seen a remarkable decrease in the cost of solar panels over the past couple of decades, and a corresponding increase in their use. But even so, it’s unlikely that you’re using solar panels at home. Part of the reason that so few people do is cost; solar panels are expensive and it takes several years, at minimum, to recoup that investment. The other major reason is that they require technical knowledge to setup, and that can be overwhelming to the average consumer. This small Window Solar Charger is designed to make it easy, and looks great at the same time.

The Grouphug Window Solar Charger just launched on Kickstarter, and has already reached more than half of its funding goal. It’s a small 10 watt solar panel housed within a tasteful 10x13 inch bamboo frame with a built-in 2200mAh battery. All you have to do is hang it up in a window that gets a lot of sun, and the solar panel will automatically charge up the internal battery throughout the day. Then, once the battery is topped off, you can plug your smartphone or tablet into the USB port to charge them from the Window Solar Charger’s battery.

Unfortunately, this probably isn’t going to save you any money. The Window Solar Charger costs $129 through the Kickstarter Early Bird Deal, but it only costs about a dollar to charge your smartphone for an entire year using electricity from your power company. The Window Solar Charger’s battery is only enough to charge a smartphone once or twice. The math is undeniable, and this device won’t save you any money. But, in a small way, it will help you reduce your dependence on fossil fuels. For the right kind of person, that kind of sustainability is worth the expense. If that sounds like you, the Kickstarter campaign will be running until July 10th, and rewards are expected to be delivered in April of 2020.
