Modern smartphones and high-resolution screens give us a wide variety of display options, but there is still something interesting about 14-segment alphanumeric displays for showing off high-contrast characters. For a convenient way to use bright red glowing numbers and letters in your project, the TickerTape Retro Display by Darren Michael Dignam presents an interesting alternative.

The TickerTape features six 14-segment characters, with a pair of glowing LEDs in between each, making it a perfect setup for telling time or dates. It’s also equipped with four touch points for human input.

For those who would like to use this in their own device, it’s 3V and 5V compatible, and can work with I2C. This, of course, means it can be used with a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or ESP32-based boards, and that it can be configured to show static text or Internet notifications as desired.

The TickerTape is now available on Tindie for $20, plus shipping.
