Claiming to have designed “the world’s smartest calendar” is a pretty big boast for any electronics company, but that’s exactly what Vitec GmnB has done with their Smart Calendar Thync — a Raspberry Pi-based smart calendar/family planner.

“With the Smart Calendar Thync, you can synchronize the appointments of the whole family as well as display them clearly and visually on the Thync — in real-time! Forgotten birthdays, anniversaries or school performances of your children are a thing of the past.”

While a lot of engineers and makers would prefer to build their own smart calendars, others would rather just buy them outright, such as business professionals and busy parents who need to monitor their kid’s activities. Being able to cross-sync multiple devices and different calendars make the Thync a great prospect in this area alone.

Under the hood, the Smart Calendar Thync is a simple design, and features a Raspberry Pi Zero W (512Mb RAM/4Gb storage), a 10.1-inch TFT display (1024 x 600), a sensor suite (gestural, proximity/distance, and light), and 802.11n WLAN, as well as a 10,000mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery.

On the software end, the Thync uses an app that lets you customize the layout of the interface, giving you plenty of options for personalization. As mentioned earlier, you can also connect with a host of calendar providers, including Google and Outlook. Thync even allows for streaming applications — weather, news feeds, sports scores, and movie listings at your local theater. It can be used as a digital photo display as well, if the need arises.

Vitec GmbH is currently crowdfunding their Smart Calendar Thync on Kickstarter in an effort to get it manufactured. Those interested can pledge around $164 or more, which gets you the Thync calendar and a micro USB-B cable but no battery — the battery is offered at the higher tiers.
