Perhaps you get home every day and open the mailbox without thinking about it much. But if you’re waiting on an important package, or just need to know what’s going on in your house’s small postal outpost, then you need some sort of electronic notification method.

Naturally, the ESP8266 module makes an excellent choice, in this case using a WeMos D1 Mini dev board. This device was attached inside the back of creator “structure7’s” mailbox with a wooden frame, and a hole was drilled through the rear of the box (and the concrete blocks surrounding it) to allow a Wi-Fi antenna to poke out.

Triggering is handled by a reed switch and magnet connected to the mailbox door, which turns the WeMos on in order to signal when the latest batch of mail has arrived via Blynk.

You can find the project’s code on GitHub, and the entire setup reportedly works in the same manner as this Dash Button.
